Coordinator of Volunteer Services

Temporary Full-time Contract to September 2018

St. Joseph’s Hospice is a faith-based organization that provides quality of life at the end of life, offering compassionate holistic care and support to individuals living with a terminal illness. Support is extended to their family members and caregivers, and to those grieving the loss of a loved one. Hospice programs and services are at no cost to those we support and are available irrespective of age, gender, religion, race, ethnicity or economic status.

Whether in the community, our wellness centre, or our 10-suite residence, St. Joseph’s Hospice provides specialized programs and services with a person-centred approach. Individuals and families are intimately involved in creating their own plan of care which best addresses their unique needs. Our competent and committed Hospice staff and volunteers work together as a team with other community partners and service providers to provide full support and quality hospice palliative care.

Working within an interdisciplinary team, and in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph’s Hospice, the Coordinator of Volunteer Services is responsible for the overall administration and management of volunteer services for St. Joseph’s Hospice. The Coordinator of Volunteer Services will ensure that effective retention strategies are in place and that all volunteers are provided with the tools required to fulfill their position. Volunteers will feel supported and recognized for their contributions. The Coordinator will ensure that volunteer services follows best practices of volunteer management, considers risks, and connects with the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

▪ Administration of the Volunteer Services Program including overseeing and evaluation the program

▪ Ensure Hospice Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO) standards are met and maintained

▪ Maintain the currency of job descriptions of all volunteer positions and create new positions as required

▪ Maintain appropriate volunteer files and database and provide statistical analysis

▪ Develop, review and update all volunteer policies

▪ Establish recruitment and retention strategies for volunteers

▪ Screen all potential volunteers

▪ Orient and train all volunteers

▪ In conjunction with the leadership of specific programs, place volunteers in appropriate positions to serve the needs of the organization


The selected candidate will have a unique skill set which includes but not limited to the following:

▪ Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in Volunteer Management, Adult Education, Human Resources, or other related field

▪ 3-5 years’ experience with large volunteer-based not for profit organization

▪ Experience with group facilitation

▪ Experience with community development

▪ Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation affecting volunteerism

▪ Knowledge of computers and networking skills

▪ Excellent interpersonal, organization, and team-building skills

▪ Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and leadership skills

▪ Experience working in the non-profit sector

▪ Strong understanding of volunteer recruitment, training, retention, and evaluation strategies

▪ Knowledge of current trends, resources, and information related to volunteerism and hospice palliative care

▪ Certificate of Completion in the Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care Education, or commitment to obtain

▪ Demonstrated relationship management skills consistent with the mission, vision and values of St. Joseph’s Hospice.
